I am worried my child might be thinking about suicide

For parents, carers and other adults supporting a child or teenager. You can ask for professional help even when you are unsure.

If they are unsafe now

If their life is at risk or you cannot keep them safe, call 999 or go to A&E. Call 999 or go to A&E after a suicide attempt, serious injury or possible overdose, even if they seem well. Find urgent help by UK nation.

YoungMinds’ parent guide to suicidal thoughts provides fuller child-specific support. Use the urgent route above if help cannot wait.

Ask clearly, and listen

YoungMinds advises asking directly about suicide. You could say: “Are you thinking about ending your life?” Asking does not put the idea into their head. Give them space to answer, take what they say seriously and thank them for telling you. Avoid arguing with their feelings or trying to make them feel guilty.

If they will not talk, you can still seek professional advice. Silence, or saying they have no plan, does not establish that they are safe.

Bring in professional help

Contact their GP or mental health team promptly about suicidal thoughts. For concerns that cannot safely wait, use urgent help. Tell the service what they said and any concerns about preparations or access to things they could use to hurt themselves. Ask for advice on keeping them safe while help is arranged.

YoungMinds' parent guide to suicidal thoughts gives fuller conversation and support guidance. This page is not a risk checklist.

Ask for a plan you can use together

Ask the treating team to explain who to call, what to do if things worsen, and how they will involve you and your child. Tell them if the plan assumes supervision or support you cannot provide. Getting care and support while waiting.

Someone to support you

If you need someone to listen, call Samaritans: 116 123, free, day or night. Use emergency care when needed. Support for your own wellbeing.
