Quick help

What to do now

Three actions. Read only what you need.

  1. Make the immediate area safer

If someone may act now, has taken an overdose, is badly injured or anyone is in immediate danger, call 999. Do not put yourself in danger.

  2. Get urgent mental-health help

If it is urgent but not an immediate danger to life, use the nation-specific urgent help page. In England, call NHS 111 and select the mental-health option.

  3. Stay calm and ask plainly

“I am worried about you. Are you thinking about suicide?”

Asking does not put the idea in their head. Listen without arguing. Do not promise secrecy if someone may be unsafe.
